Prescribing Policy: Gender Identity

Supporting Safe, Inclusive, and Specialist-Informed Care

At The Crouch Hall Road Surgery and The 157 Medical Practice, we are committed to supporting our trans and non-binary patients with care that is respectful, affirming, and safe.

We follow national guidance from the General Medical Council (GMC) and British Medical Association (BMA), alongside North Central London (NCL) prescribing policies. These guidelines help ensure that the care we provide is consistent with best clinical practice and within our professional competencies.

Our Policy

We do not initiate hormone therapy or bridging prescriptions for gender identity concerns without support from a recognised specialist.

We are happy to continue prescribing where a patient is under the care of a Gender Identity Clinic and there is a shared care agreement or clear evidence of specialist involvement.

This approach ensures we act in accordance with GMC guidance that clinicians must prescribe only within the limits of their knowledge, skills, and experience.

We can support referrals to NHS Gender Identity Clinics, including the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, which provides services for our region.

We understand the challenges our trans and non-binary patients may face in accessing timely specialist care, and we are here to support you through that process.

If you would like to discuss your care, please speak to a GP or a member of our team.
